Hi, my name is John Yaxley
I am a qualified and experienced surgeon, having performed thousands of urological surgical procedures. I am a urologist who has a sub-specialised practice dedicated to the investigation, diagnosis and management of prostate cancer. I have performed over 3000 radical prostatectomy procedures, including over 1000 with the robot-assisted laparoscopic technique. Additionally, I have performed over 1000 prostate brachytherapy procedures. I am also experienced in new emerging treatments, including focal ablation of prostate cancer with the NanoKnife irreversible electroporation technique, which I commenced with my colleagues at the Wesley hospital in 2018. This treatment aims to help maintain patient’s quality of life and minimise the risk of impotence and incontinence compared to whole gland treatment of prostate cancer.
I am a past Chairman of the Northern Section of the Urological Society of Australia and New Zealand. I have a strong academic interest, having published over 145 manuscripts in international peer reviewed journals. I am also a reviewer for many international urology journals. I am on the Editorial Board of the journal Prostate Cancer and Prostatic Diseases. I am involved in academic teaching programs for students at the University of Queensland and remain a supervisor of advanced urological registrar trainees at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital.
My history
I obtained my medical degree from the University of Queensland in 1986 and after my initial hospital internships, I began specialisation in urology and urological surgery. I achieved fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 1995. I subsequently obtained post fellowship specialist training in the Bristol Urology Institute (UK) in 1996-97. I became an Associate Professor at the University of Queensland in 2017.
Personal life
I am married with three absolutely wonderful children, two of whom are doctors. My youngest daughter has pursued a career in musical theatre and she is, of course, brilliant.
I enjoy athletics, reformer pilates, watching rugby, and netball, or just about any sport on TV.
