A targeted approach with fewer side effects
When it comes to treating prostate cancer, it’s natural to want the most effective option with the least disruption to your life. That’s where focal therapy comes in – a modern, targeted treatment that focuses on just the cancer-affected part of the prostate, rather than removing or treating the whole gland.
So, what is focal therapy?
Focal therapy is like a “spot treatment” for prostate cancer. Instead of treating the entire prostate (which can lead to more side effects), focal therapy targets only the area where the cancer is located. The idea is to control the cancer while keeping the rest of the prostate – and the things it affects – working as normally as possible.
It’s a bit like patching a small hole in a tyre, instead of replacing the whole thing.
Who is it for?
Focal therapy is usually an option for men with low to intermediate risk prostate cancer – where the cancer is small, hasn’t spread, and is located in a specific part of the prostate.
It’s best suited to those who:
Have had MRI scans or biopsies that clearly show the cancer is in just one area
Are looking to avoid the side effects often linked to surgery or radiation
Want a treatment option that fits more easily into daily life
What happens during the procedure?
There are a few types of focal therapy, depending on your situation. Some common methods include:
High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) – uses sound waves to heat and destroy the cancer cells
Cryotherapy – freezes the cancer cells
Laser or NanoKnife (IRE) – uses precision energy to zap the cancer
These are usually done under anaesthetic, and most people go home the same day or the next.
Is focal therapy right for me?
That’s something we’ll work out together. Every person’s situation is different, and we’ll look at your test results, your overall health, and what matters most to you. Some men feel more comfortable with a “watch and wait” approach, while others prefer to treat it sooner.
Our goal is to give you the facts, answer your questions, and help you feel confident in whatever path you choose.
